The Adventure Continues.....

Update: She's baaa-aack! On the blog, that is. I'm handing the reins back to ES after a too-long hiatus. I have just been baby-sitting it until she was ready to return. Thank you all! Give ES a big welcome back--I know you all really missed her and are eager to hear how things have been going for her these past several months. I missed her, too. ~D

This blog was started by ES, and it was her baby--I just added stuff here and there, and kept it going when she was dealing with her ongoing health crisis.

ES has moved on to her next big adventure, but I wanted to keep the blog going in honor of all the love and hard work she put into it.

I will not pretend to be as informed about things as ES--she knows everything there is to know about anything. But as I continue learning, experimenting, and growing, I will share what I can here. Feel free to contribute--I want this site to continue to be a place to get ideas and learn from one another. ~D

The Self Sustaining Kitchen is a work in progress. What we advocate is getting your family ready for anything.

We will be covering a large range of topics. At times, we will name products by brand name; if we do, it will be because we really like them and find them much better than other products, or they will be just plain crap and we will be warning you about then.

Now why did we name this the Self Sustaining Kitchen? Well, if your local supermarket closed tomorrow how long could you feed you family?

We don't want to sound preachy, we would just like to share what we've learned in our kitchen. We will cover topics such as: preserving food, canning, freezing and drying. We will tell you about dehydrated products that work well for us and if they are cost efficient. Some things may seem a little pricy at first, but work out good in the long run.

If you have any questions or subjects that you would like to see covered, please feel free to email ES at

Update on ES.....

Sorry we haven't been posting much lately. ES was home for just shy of a week, then developed an infection in the incision site and had to go back to the hospital for antibiotic therapy. On the plus side, she saw the surgeon yesterday, and he said it actually was looking okay, considering.

Bud went with her by ambulance on Tuesday to the hospital, since I needed the car to go to work. After work, I headed for T-town, which is an hour and a 1/2 drive from work. 1 mile from the hospital, the car broke down.....

Car is in the shop, so I have been driving "The Beast" to work: a 1978 Ford truck that gets about 8 miles to the gallon....

And just to prove when it rains, it pours, Bud went to start the lawnmower, and the battery was dead. He tried to jump it, but no luck. He took the battery out and put it in the truck for me to take to Sears to get a new one. He rolled the window down, as the cab of the truck was very hot, and he didn't think that would be a good thing with the battery in there. You guessed it: It is now pouring rain, and the window is down on the truck.

Sigh. Just a bunch of little setbacks. After the rain, we will look for the rainbow. ES should be home in a few days. Not sure exactly how we are getting her home....We'll figure something out--heck we are survivalists, right?

Learnin' to dance in the rain....

Okay, so Bud talked to ES last night, and she said, "Um, we have a battery charger, why don't you try and charge the battery first?"

I actually had forgot we had one! Bud hooked it up last night, and sure enough, he got it charged. Saved us about $30 for a new battery.....

Lawn is mowed ;-)

Hey, teamwork! Who can beat it?! (smile)

Good to hear from you guys again.

Sorry to hear about the set backs. I've been so involved with my life that I haven't been praying for you like I should. Will be doing more of that now.

Is there anyway that I could get a little concrete help to you? I wouldn't be much, you know, but it might help some.

Sorry to hear about all these set backs. You seem to all be survivors and strong people didn't someone say..God doesn't give you stuff you can't handle?

I hope this is the end to your troubles and ES will be home and well soon.

Thanks again, everyone, for your thoughts and prayers. ES will undergo one more surgery tomorrow to "contour" her stump so she will have a better time getting fitted with a prosthetic leg. She wants to do a few days in rehab as well, because she wants to learn how to use those "1/2 crutch" crutches. Not sure what they are called, but I know y'all know what I am talking about.

Car is still in the shop, but at least we have a "diagnosis".

It is my day off, so I am baking french bread to go with the pot of Grandma Ryan's Spaghetti Sauce I am making. The house smells absolutely heavenly. I wish I could post a scratch and sniff on here for y'all to enjoy the aroma!

Will keep you posted on ES. Thanks, disciple, on the offer. That was so very sweet. We will manage, though. Remember, we are survivors!

Big hugs to all of you!

ES is home! Brought her home last night. Had to borrow a friend's car, as ours is still in the shop, but she is HOME!!!!!!!!

She is in good spirits, and glad to be out of the hospital. I'm sure she will be back on here soon.
