The Adventure Continues.....

Update: She's baaa-aack! On the blog, that is. I'm handing the reins back to ES after a too-long hiatus. I have just been baby-sitting it until she was ready to return. Thank you all! Give ES a big welcome back--I know you all really missed her and are eager to hear how things have been going for her these past several months. I missed her, too. ~D

This blog was started by ES, and it was her baby--I just added stuff here and there, and kept it going when she was dealing with her ongoing health crisis.

ES has moved on to her next big adventure, but I wanted to keep the blog going in honor of all the love and hard work she put into it.

I will not pretend to be as informed about things as ES--she knows everything there is to know about anything. But as I continue learning, experimenting, and growing, I will share what I can here. Feel free to contribute--I want this site to continue to be a place to get ideas and learn from one another. ~D

The Self Sustaining Kitchen is a work in progress. What we advocate is getting your family ready for anything.

We will be covering a large range of topics. At times, we will name products by brand name; if we do, it will be because we really like them and find them much better than other products, or they will be just plain crap and we will be warning you about then.

Now why did we name this the Self Sustaining Kitchen? Well, if your local supermarket closed tomorrow how long could you feed you family?

We don't want to sound preachy, we would just like to share what we've learned in our kitchen. We will cover topics such as: preserving food, canning, freezing and drying. We will tell you about dehydrated products that work well for us and if they are cost efficient. Some things may seem a little pricy at first, but work out good in the long run.

If you have any questions or subjects that you would like to see covered, please feel free to email ES at

The ramblings of a Grateful Sisterwife

video
This is just a couple minutes of my vacation visiting my daughter and grand daughters in San Diego. It was a wonderful trip. It was a trip that I couldn't have taken if not for the fact that I'm married to Bud and so is Dee.

Bud worked his butt off taking care of the animals while I was gone. It could have overwhelmed him if Dee had not of been there to lend a hand. Dee holds a full-time hard job.The house, dinner and shopping could have overwhelmed Dee, if Bud had not been here to support her.The life we have chosen is not for the faint of heart, it's work. When everything is going well its still work, but has a satisfaction level that can't be compared.

Things haven't gone well the past year. I've been sick, very sick, with until a month ago an unknown illness; most days I was just about useless. Not only did Bud and Dee have to take care of everything around the house, they took care of me. I'm NOT a good sick person, add that to the fact that the Doctor couldn't figure out what was wrong with me... made life around me more than crappy. Pain, fatigue, frustration and depression for over 9 months just about broke us all at one time or another. We think we can see the end of the tunnel. I’m slowly getting better and the trip to San Diego did wonders for my depression.

(Note to my fellow country girls)
I have Lymes disease 3 rd stage. In all fairness to my Doctor there was no reason for her to look for it because here in Alabama, Lymes isn’t an issue yet. I figured it out from my symptoms. I got it 4 years ago in Ohio. I’m a hunter and I would process deer for other hunters. 4 years ago in January I got what I thought was the flu except it lasted about a month. I have not been exposed to deer or been sick since then. If Lymes is caught in the first and second stage it’s easily cured. The 3rd and 4th stages can leave you with life time pain and fatigue. If you live in an area that has reported cases of Lymes make sure to have everyone check everyone else for ticks during tick season.(it can be fun) Even if you don’t mess with deer your dogs and cats can bring them into the house.

Back to my gratitude. I’m a very lucky woman to have two such loving wonderful people in my life. This home, our goals require all of us working together. It needs all of our best efforts. I could give very little help the past few months and Bud and Deb had to go over and above to keep things running. They did it with smiles.
Es.

I'm so sorry to hear you've been unwell. Lyme's Disease sucks.
Glad your family has been so supportive.
I don't know what we'd do without my sisterwife, too.
I hope you'll be on the mend. Is there any treatment for the symptoms, at least?

Thank you for your kind thoughts.
I am getting better. Just tired most of the time. They can give you meds for the pain but that can make you more tired.. I have found a few herbal teas that help with the fatigue..life is getting back to normal. es

Oh Lyme's Disease is just horrible! I think the Devil himself must have come up with it! I am so sorry to hear you have been suffering from this! I know a few people who have contracted this. Deer ticks are very common here, we check for them on a daily basis!

It sounds like you have a wonderful family who has loved and supported you through this! That's what true love is all about :0)

I recently heard of a natural reppelant, just in case some of your readers in the North are looking to ward of deer ticks. Pure Vanilla, extract or oil....an expensive solution I suppose, but if you need something in a pinch several of the old timers around here swear by it!

I've never really read anything about Lyme's Disease until your blog entry. I'm sorry to hear about your illness and hope that you will continue to indulge in things that will ease your discomfort.

It warms my heart to hear you speak about your sisterwife..so touching!
